Back Seat Driver

16x12″ pastel on paper

I got to photograph rhinos here in South Africa and was amazed by their combination of calm and strength, which is not what you would think of in a large vegetarian. This rhino was not charging when I saw him, but thought it might be nice to give him some movement. I broke the rule about centering the composition and also crowded him with the top edge to enhance his physical presence and create tension. To enhance the focal point I raised the chroma of the dirt around him to a bright red.
