Ouma’s Joke

18x24 pastel on paper

“Ouma” is Afrikaans for grandmother. My Ouma was telling some friends the following joke. “A group of  nuns go to a rugby game and wimples block the view of the fans behind them. The fans decide to heckle them so they will move. The first fan says ‘I wish I had gone to New Zealand because there are only 50 nuns in the whole country!’ The next says ‘Kenya would be better, there are only 20 nuns there!’ The next says ‘Ethiopia is even better! They only have 2 nuns in the whole country!’ The mother superior has had enough, so she stands up and turns to the fans and shouts ‘Then why don’t you all go to hell! There aren’t ANY nuns there!’”
