Westcliff Morning

45x60cm pastel on panel

I wanted to capture the warm morning atmosphere and the variation in color and texture within the rocks. The way the light was affecting the mist spilling over the mountains fascinated me. I hiked down the ocean cliffs near my house and found a spot sheltered from the wind among the rocks. I began with the distant mountains and the sun to capture them before the light changed too much. I ended with the foreground rocks, which I greatly abstracted to prevent them becoming a focal point. While I was painting, A pair of Rock Dassies came out and began playing on the rocks near the center of my composition.
