Constantiaberg Art Society held their annual Founder’s Trophy Competition November 28th 2017 at the Alphen Centre in Constantiaberg. The event pairs a end-of-year social gathering with a “Best Painting” competition. Members bring food and vote for their favorite paintings. Members can enter one painting in any media. There were around 35 entries this year and many more artists present to vote.
Artist Christopher Reid took 2nd place for his pastel painting, “Protea Explosion”. Canvases and art supply gift certificates were awarded to the winners.
Christopher Reid won a People’s Choice Award for his painting, Freedom, at the 2017 Freedom In Art Competition. The Auction & Exhibition Gala Event was held at the Cape Town City Hall on the 18th November from 5-9pm. Proceeds from the event went toward helping fight human trafficking. S-CAPE and STOP charities benefitted and were on hand to answer questions.
This year is the first of what organizers plan to be an annual awareness initiative. Artwork was featured on an online gallery prior to the event and is made available for voting and bidding on www.freedominart.co.za in addition to the live exhibition. There was a wide range of artistic styles and skill levels on display and a large crowd attended to support the cause.
Christopher Reid’s acrylic painting, “Kissed By Firelight”, won 3rd place in the South African Portrait Society’s online competition. The theme this year was “Fashion Portrait”. Artists from across South Africa entered portraits in any medium.
Judges Margaret Gradwell and Annette Pretorius based their choices on the following three criteria: Realism & High Technical Quality, Theme Representation, Originality.
The 2017 SANLAM Portrait Awards, the largest art competition in South Africa, received just under 1500 entries this year. From that field 100 paintings have been selected by the panel of judges. Christopher Reid’s acrylic self-portrait, “Super Selfie”, was selected as one of the 100. The exhibition was on display at the Michaelis Gallery in Cape Town and then at Rust-En-Vreded Gallery in Durbanville. The competition is held every other year and it is quite an honor to have been selected.
