SANLAM Portrait Awards

The 2017 SANLAM Portrait Awards, the largest art competition in South Africa, received just under 1500 entries this year. From that field 100 paintings have been selected by the panel of judges. Christopher Reid’s acrylic self-portrait, “Super Selfie”, was selected as one of the 100. The exhibition was on display at the Michaelis Gallery in Cape Town and then at Rust-En-Vreded Gallery in Durbanville. The competition is held every other year and it is quite an honor to have been selected.

After contemplating many years, and following the progress of several artists, I chose Christopher to do a custom painting from a 40 year old colored photograph.  Old pictures fade; however, I explained the magic that was always present in the subject’s eyes. Chris’s ability to translate, through his use of color and lighting, is a true talent that actually touched my heart.  Because of this, I also shared a scan of the painting with the Vietnam Veteran’s “Wall of Faces”. I also have a small custom ‘still life’ of tulips by Chris that makes you smile for no reason.  I highly recommend this artist.
